Delivery apps Getir and Gorillas to quit UK with 1,500 jobs at risk

The business will focus on its home country of Turkey

Delivery firm Getir will quit the UK - as well as Germany, the Netherlands and the US - with 1,500 jobs at the British arm at risk.

The business also owns the Gorillas brand, which will close in the UK as well.

The Turkish business was once valued at $12 billion, but has struggled since the pandemic amid mounting losses. In a funding round in September of last year, its valuation was cut to $2.5 billion.

In 2021, Getir signed a three-year sponsorship deal with Tottenham Hotspur that saw the brand name featured on the front of the club’s training kits. It was Spurs’ first-ever front-of-training-shirt sponsorship.

Today, it said it would close all of its non-Turkish operations to focus on its home country, which brings in 93% of its revenue.

It said: “The company will focus on its core market of Turkey, where it sees the biggest potential for long-term sustainable growth”.

Getir, headquartered in Leyton, did not mention how many jobs are likely to go, but it employs 1,500 people in the UK, mostly as delivery riders or warehouse staff.

Getir acquired rival delivery app Gorillas in 2022 for $1.2 billion.

Alongside the market exits, Getir said it raised new funding from a group led by Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Co. Getir did not reveal its valuation under the latest funding round, but it is likely that its value has been cut again.

It said: “Getir has raised a new investment round, led by Mubadala and G Squared.

"Getir will utilise these funds to bolster its competitive position in its core food and grocery delivery businesses in Turkey.

"Getir expresses its sincere appreciation for the dedication and hard work of all its employees in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and the US.”
